I first started making sound-inspired ceramic sculpture shortly after a major surgery in 2006 that rendered me completely deaf in my right ear.   I became curious to pursue the role that sound might play in my art by creating the resonance that I could no longer perceive.  I started making simple rattles and witnessed their transformation over time into rain sticks (traditionally made 0ut of cactus or bamboo).  I experimented with the shape of the chamber, culminating in a circular form that is able to “rain” continuously.  ...This is a distinct aspect because the clay allows for shapes that traditional instruments made from plants and trees do not.  Sensitivity is infused into each piece, from hand rolling hundreds of internal beads to careful slab construction to decoration with texture and stain.  The sound of each one differs depending on many factors during the construction and firing phases, ranging from earthy tones like their predecessors to a crystalline clear sound.  Each rainmaker is handmade (even the beads inside) and can be used in meditation, for celebrations / rituals, or for just pure delight!
